Are You Using Email Forwarding?

Do you know how your email gets to your computer? Most of you probably have an account with your ISP or a Webmail service such as Yahoo Mail, Live Mail, or GMail. I recently made a switch to a surprisingly elegant innovation known as email forwarding. I now have it setup so that any message sent to any edenware.net address or eringle.net address will redirect to my personal gmail account. I picked Gmail because they offer a huge amount of storage and they simply make the process simple.

Basically what happens is this:

  1. Someone sends an email to an edenware.net or eringle.net address.
  2. The email is processed by my friend’s server and then forwarded to my Gmail via my server, because his ISP blocks the Internet ports used to send/receive email, so we’ve setup a tunneling system.
  3. I receive the email in my Gmail account, which I’ve setup to use the email address the message was sent to as the replying email address.

Yeah, it’s that simple. I can have multiple emails at once, while only having to check one account. I believe Google has Gmail setup so that you can use their servers for the entire process. Do a search and you can probably find a few other free forwarding services.
