A Review of WebcamMax

I don’t own a Mac, but I’d like to actually use my webcam. So, I setup a Ustream.tv account awhile back, and tried live streaming. Unfortunately, WebcamMax, the software I was using, was buggy and was a bit of a memory hog. However, after downloading a trial of the latest version today, I have come to the conclusion that they have worked some of those bugs out. Now, I still can’t go into 640×480 mode without my laptop’s CPU maxing out, but other than that I have no problems. I’d recommend it as a good alternative to CamTwist for the Mac for those that do not own a Mac. It’s much more feature-rich than the other webcam software out there, though that comes with a pain in the wallet. I believe a license costs around $30, which I guess is deserving.

While the product itself is alright, I do believe that they need better customer support and possibly a larger development team. People have been asking for certain features and performance improvements for a long time now, and I have yet to see any real headway. Perhaps open-sourcing parts of the program would attract some quality coders to help out?

Well, I do not believe I am qualified to give an official rating, I give WebcamMax a 3.8/5, which is not bad, seeing as I have not reviewed anything else to compare it to.

So, if you want to give WebcamMax a spin, head over to the WebcamMax website.
